Boho Modern

After completing my client, Melissa Chanel’s new Glam Room aka #ProjectChateauChanel, she wanted me to help her with the rest of her apartment in Charlotte, North Carolina. Up Next: Her Master Suite.

Melissa recently updated her headboard from beige to navy blue, but felt the space still needed some more love. With all the glam going on in the rest of her place and her new office, she felt that her bedroom was now the least appealing room. So she called BLB in for assistance.

Let’s take a look at the BEFORE, shall we?

Melissa wasn’t sure about painting the room or an accent wall like in her Glam Room, so we decided to fill the space with colorful décor instead. In addition to the new navy blue headboard, Melissa purchased a pair of blue and white trellis-print drapes from Wayfair and was gifted a gorgeous multi-color rug from Nourison. This would serve as inspiration for our shopping trip when I arrived in town in October.

We started the evening at At Home Stores. I love starting shopping trips here because there’s such a large variety of inventory that will compliment every color palette you can think of. There we found a beautiful floral oil painted canvas. Though we didn’t want to go overly girly in the space, it would provide just the right amount of femininity in contrast with the navy headboard. I suggested we purchase two and hang them in a mirrored position above the bed to give the illusion that the artwork was sold as a pair.

Next, Melissa needed lighting. The old chandelier was recently removed and a new ceiling fan would replace it in the future, so we needed table or floor lamps in the interim. Now that we had colors to pull from the artwork and rug, I found some amazing orange geometric-shaped lamps that would make the pair of white nightstands really pop. Speaking of popping, Melissa DIY’d the drawers later that evening with new gold pulls from Target’s Threshold brand. This simple and inexpensive change totally modernized the traditional look of the furniture. Such an easy fix!

Okay, back to At Home! If you ever need pillows of any color, they’ve got you covered! We picked out four options that complimented the bold colors in the rug and artwork. Once we figured out the lamp shades (At Home has a ton of those in all shapes and sizes as well), Melissa and I headed to Home Goods and Target to finish up our shopping run.

Melissa’s current bedding was white with blush trim. Though we could make it work, we wanted to find a fresh white duvet or comforter set that would brighten the space and give her bedroom a boutique hotel feel. After circling the store a few times to search for matching white Euro shams, we stumbled across the perfect Boho-inspired comforter set that would give the bed the bright white surface and texture we were looking for.

Later at Target, Melissa and I continued to search for knick-knacks. We located a few colorful glass candles and a turquoise picture frame for the nightstands. Also in the Home section, we admired the eclectic new Opalhouse line. The velvet blankets and pillows would be too much given its rich, dark and bold colors, but using one for just a pop of color at the foot of the bed would accessorize the new white comforter nicely! We also picked out the Quatrefoil gold mirror by Threshold that would fill the small wall space between the entrance and master bathroom. This would give Melissa a stylish last-look to glimpse at daily on the way out the door. We’d also order another Opalhouse item, the Touraco chest, and position it under the TV to give her additional storage.

Once unloaded back at the apartment, we set up the nightstands with their new lamps, redressed the bed with our purchases and hung the artwork and mirror with the handy assistance of Melissa’s boyfriend (thanks Isa!). By the end of the night, we were very pleased with the end result.

Take a look at the AFTER:

I’m so in love with the Bohemian chic and modern look of this space and even more impressed by the amount of time it took to throw it together (just 3 hours shopping and another hour installing!). Best of all, Melissa loves it too and can finally call her master bedroom as pretty as the rest of her place!
